Today we’re featuring Crestline, Ohio’s baseball great Gates Brown! Gates Brown played for the Detroit Tigers from 1963-1975 and while he played baseball and football at a young age in school, you’ll never guess where he honed his craft that got him recognized by MLB Scouts - prison! That’s right, Brown was recruited out of the Mansfield Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio.

He went on to be a World Series Champion as a player in 1968 and as a coach in 1984. An extraordinary story of a man whose life started going in the wrong direction at an early age but with great talent, a little luck, an opportunity, hard work and perseverance, Gates Brown’s story is an example of a successful second chance that took him from the prison yard to the World Series.

Our story also includes a special appearance by 2-time AL Cy Young award winner and last pitcher in MLB history to win 30 or more games in a season - Denny McLain who will share with you his memories of Gates Brown along with his version of the famous “Hot Dog” story!
